Removal of the negative battery cable from the battery is the initial step for servicing and repairing the fan clutch. Attach the thermal viscous fan drive/fan blade assembly to the water pump hub shaft and remove it by turning the mounting nut counterclockwise as you see it from the front, because the threads on the viscous fan drive are Right- Hand. At this step, do not attempt to remove either the viscous fan drive assembly from the vehicle or the fan blade assembly from the viscous fan drive. Then, unbolt the shroud nuts on the upper crossmember and remove the whole fan shroud, fan blade and drive unit. Following removal, hold the viscous fan drive upright so that the silicone fluid does not run into its bearing system. Don't remove the bolts that connect the water pump pulley to the engine, because the belt is under stress. Pry off the four bolts at the fan blade assembly and the viscous fan drive. Hand wash the fan blades with warm, soapy water, avoiding any rough surface cleaners. In some cases, mechanical damage to the fan blade assembly may point to vibration damage in the water pump and viscous fan drive. Unmount the fan blade assembly from the viscous fan drive unit and lay the fan down with its leading side facing the floor; change the fan if the distance separating the not pressed blade and the floor is greater than 2.0 mm (0.090 Inch), verifying that there is no side sway beyond this measurement. Watch for any cracks, bends, unfastened rivets or breaks in the welds in the fan assembly and change the fan if there is any sign of these issues. Place the fan blade on top of the viscous fan drive and then tighten the bolts until they have 27 Nm (20 Ft. lbs.) torque. Make certain to properly route the single water pump accessory belt over the fan and fan drive so that the engine's water circulation continues correctly without overheating.
