Jeep Grand Cherokee Ignition Lock Cylinder Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Reinstall the Ignition Lock Cylinder on Jeep Grand Cherokee?
    A:
Before removing the ignition lock cylinder, put the key into the ignition lock cylinder. First, unplug the negative cable from the battery, put the transmission shifter into Park and turn the Steering Wheel up as far as it will go. At the bottom of the key lock housing, you'll find a retaining pin. Rotate the key to the Run position, push in the retaining pin, pull out the cylinder and make a note of the position of the alignment tang. During reinstallation, move the key to the Run position. After that, lift off the cover under the steering wheel, followed by removing the upper and lower front covers. When removing the upper fixed column shroud, unscrew it to access the machine. Release the Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (Skim) by unwinding it, as well as unplugging the connectors at the switch. Once you have the ignition lock cylinder out, unscrew the locking nut that holds in place with a tamper-proof torx bit (Snap-On Ttxr10e or a similar one). Using pliers, squeeze the switch lock tabs and gently pull the switch out, so you don't move the key lock cylinder. Before installation, have the transmission shifter in Park and turn the key in the lock to set it to Run. Affix the key cylinder into the housing, align its pin into its place and push until it goes in and locks. Pull the cylinder slightly out of the housing to make sure it is properly retained. Insert the Ignition Switch into the housing on the steering column. If it won't go in easily, rotate the key cylinder a small amount and then push the switch in so it locks. Lobe an ignition switch mounting screw and tighten it to 3 Nm (30 in. lbs.) torque. Secure the electrical connectors to the ignition switch so that the locking tabs are all the way in. Place the Skim collar in place and fasten it using only 3 Nm (about 30 in. lbs.) torque. After that, put on the steering column covers. Next, secure the negative wire back to the battery and make sure that P opposes key rotation in the Lock position as well. With the vehicle at idle, do not move the shifter from Park unless the brake is applied and ensure the ignition switch works correctly in positions Accessory Lock, Off, On, Run and Start. If the key is in the Lock position, the steering wheel will lock and if the key is in On, it will unlock.
  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Ignition Lock Cylinder on Jeep Grand Cherokee?
    A:
To work on the Ignition Switch, first cut the negative cable from the battery. Assume the plastic trim tool and gently lift up on the switch bezel which pops on. After inserting the original ignition key, turn it to ON and press the release tab that's beside the main switch. Remove the cylinder for the ignition lock from the housing. The lock cylinder requires the ignition key to be placed inside and turned to ON before the retaining tab on its side can be pushed down. Place the shaft on the end of the lock cylinder inside the socket at the housing's end and verify the socket is turned on. Lay the ignition lock cylinder in the grooves of the housing, then slide it into place so that the release tab sticks out of the hole at the side of the housing. Snap the watch bezel into place and re-attach the negative battery cable.
