How to Service a Tail Light on Jeep Grand Cherokee?

The first step to servicing the tail lamp is to disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. Pop the liftgate open and remove the two screws securing the back lamp unit to the side jamb there. Move the rear outboard end of the lamp unit away from the car to detach the two studs you see from the two round grommets in the outer panel. Move the lamp out from the vehicle to remove the retainer off the wire harness for the lamp from the tab on the back of the lamp housing, then detach the lamp's wire harness from the clips on the back of the housing and remove the lamp from the quarter outer panel. When installing, put the rear lamp unit into the hole in the quarter outer panel and then secure the wire harness to its socket plate in the back of the lamp unit. Slot in the auxiliary side of the lamp cord's retainer into the receptacle on the housing. At the same time, check that the grommets are in good order and continue on by installing them in the quarter outer panel. Place the two ball studs on the lamp housing by the door into the two grommets in the quarter panel and then press the outside of the lamp firmly until all sides click in. Attach the two screws that fix the rear lamp unit to the side jamb of the liftgate opening and tighten them to 2 N.m (20 in. lbs.) Next, reconnect the battery negative cable.
