Jeep Wrangler automobiles incorporate a Timing Belt Tensioner whose primary function is to maintain a tight belt, lest it develops slippage. This component actually tugs at the timing belt, an element that holds a key importance as far as the efficiency of the timing system in the engine is concerned. Jeep Wrangler Timing Belt Tensioners come in a single unit, in kits, or in sets depending on the application which include the fan, the alternator and the air conditioning system. It could be that there are various Timing Belt Tensioners which have been used on the different models of Wrangler, depending on where and how they could be implemented. The main function remains consistent: to offer the ideal tension for the timing belt hence ensuring adequate performance for the Jeep Wrangler.

Jeep Wrangler Timing Belt Tensioner Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Address Issues with a Timing Belt Tensioner on a Jeep Wrangler?
    A:
To start servicing or repairing the Timing Belt tensioner and pulley, you must first get rid of the timing belt and idler pulley. Grab the camshaft sprocket using Special Tool 6847 and as you remove the bolt, remove both of the cam sprockets. After that, undo the screws holding the back timing belt cover and remove the cover from the engine. Working with the timing belt open, remove the lower bolt fastening the tensioner to the engine and take out the entire assembly. When installing, place the timing belt tensioner onto the engine and insert the lower mounting bolt without tightening it yet. When aligning the tensioner, attach a mounting bolt (M10) about 5 to 7 turns into its upper bracket. Turn the tensioner's lower bolt to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) and then take out the bolt used for alignment from the upper mount. Put the timing belt cover and tighten the fasteners, after that install the timing belt idler pulley, thumb tightening its mounting bolt to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.). Set Special Tool 6847 on top of the camshaft sprockets to keep them in place and tighten the bolts to 101 Nm (75 ft. lbs.). After that, put the timing belt in place.
