A Timing Belt in Jeep Wrangler automobiles performs the critical function of the rough arrangement of the crankshaft with the camshaft to ensure the temporal coordination of the opening and closing of engine valves. This is crucial so that the two can remain on balance for the engine to function effectively, this is by joining the crankshaft with the belt and the camshaft through a tensioner with several idler pulleys. For many years, Jeep Wrangler models have always incorporated timing belts made of rubber with fibers, these belts are preferred based on their affordability, low noise production and comparatively low friction compared to earlier gears. These belts need to be inspected and replaced, preferably every 60,000 miles or more but they also run components such as water pumps. Typically modern designs with curved teeth are more durable and less noisy therefore they can be depended on for Jeep Wrangler cars.

Jeep Wrangler Timing Belt Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install a Timing Belt on Jeep Wrangler?
    A:
You need to start by taking off the air cleaner upper cover, housing and clean air tube, next elevate the vehicle on a hoist and remove the accessory Drive Belts. After that, disconnect the Crankshaft vibration damper and remove the air conditioner/generator Belt Tensioner and pulley assembly. Open the lower front cover by removing its bolts and cover, then take the car down and pull out the bolts attaching the timing belt upper front cover and the cover themselves. Before removing the timing belt, check that the TDC mark on the oil pump housing is matching the TDC mark on the crankshaft sprocket, by turning the crankshaft and matching the timing marks. To lock the belt tensioner, put in a 6 mm Allen wrench and insert a 1/8 or 3 mm Allen wrench into the pin on the front of the tensioner. While you do this, rotate counterclockwise to lock it in place and after that, remove the timing belt. Once you have removed the negative Battery Cable and taken out the timing belt, get Special Tool 6793 and snap C-4685-C2 onto the sprocket. A timing belt should not be cleaned; if dirt gets on it, change it and clean the sprockets with an acceptable solvent. Use Special Tool 6792 to match the initial crankshaft sprocket depth. After that, set the crankshaft sprocket and timing belt into place. Line up the crankshaft sprocket and the pointer on the oil pump housing and adjust the Camshaft timing marks so the exhaust camshaft sprocket is lower by a One-half notch than the intake camshaft one. The timing belt should be placed around the crankshaft, water pump sprocket, idler, both camshaft sprockets and then tensioner. Unscrew the locknut on the exhaust camshaft sprocket, move everything counterclockwise and readjust the belt slack. Add a 6 mm Allen wrench into the hexagon hole at the top of the belt tensioner pulley and turn it counterclockwise until you see the setting notch in the same place as the spring tang. Next, turn the belt tensioner lock nut clockwise until the wrench shows 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.) resistance. Remove the wrenches and then rotate the crankshaft clockwise to TDC, manually turn it two full steps clockwise so the belt seats properly and make certain the timing marks are aligned. If the spring tang is not within the right range, then re-adjust the tensioner. Afterward, add the timing belt front covers and bolts, plus the air conditioning/generator belt tensioner and pulley, crankshaft vibration damper, accessory drive belts, drive belt splash shield and air cleaner upper cover and clean air tube.
