2000 Dodge Dakota Brake Caliper Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair a Brake Caliper on 2000 Dodge Dakota?
A: The first thing you should do to service and repair the brake caliper is clean both the master cylinder reservoir and its filler caps, then take out the filler cap and use a suction gun to drain a quarter of the fluid. Lift up the car and take out the front wheel and tire set. Bottom the pistons in the caliper bore with a large C-clamp placed on the outside face of the brake caliper and put the clamp screw between the two brake shoes. Remove the brake hose from the caliper and throw out any worn or damaged hose fitting washers. With a screwdriver, lift the caliper spring and remove it from the holes in the caliper, before pulling out the caliper and shoes. Select the brake shoes, then install them in the caliper. After that, put the caliper and brake shoes over the rotor, with brake shoe ends held by the slide surfaces at the upper part of the steering knuckle. Fasten the caliper slide pins to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.) and tighten them by hand at first, so you do not cross-thread. First, place the caliper spring into one hole and under the adapter, then put down pressure on the opposite end to secure it, next pry the spring up at the top so it sits easily in the other caliper hole. Secure the caliper hose line with seal washers and screw on the clamp bolt until it reaches torque of 24 Nm (18 ft. lbs.). Check ahead of time that the brake hose is not twisted before tightening. Allow the brake fluid to empty from the base system, replace both wheel and tire assemblies, remove the supports and drop the vehicle to the ground. Press the brake pedal to set the brake shoes, refill the brake fluid reservoir and check that it is easy to use before you drive.
