2001 Dodge Dakota Brake Caliper Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair a Brake Caliper on 2001 Dodge Dakota?
A: Begin by washing both the brake reservoir and its caps. Then, take the filler cap off, empty about 1/4 of the brake fluid using a clean suction syringe and close the cap again. Put the vehicle up on stands, then take out the front wheel and tire assembly. Put a large C-clamp across the pistons at the bottom of the caliper to hold them in place, placing the clamp frame on the rear with its screw on the outboard pad. Unhook the brake hose at the caliper and throw out any inefficient or broken hose fitting washers. Use a screwdriver to lift up the caliper spring and slide the spring out of the caliper holes. After that, take out the caliper and the brake pads. Slide the brake pads into the caliper first and after that, put the caliper and pads in place over the rotor so the brake pad ends rest on the slide surfaces of the ledges inside the steering knuckle. Use a torque wrench to tighten the slide pins to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.), remembering to turn them loosely by hand before wrenching. Sit one end of the caliper spring into the opening of the caliper and pull down the other end underneath the adapter, then press the spring up with a screwdriver until it seats correctly at the other caliper end. Install the seal washers on the fitting and tighten the bolt to 24 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) while making sure the brake hose isn't twisted or kinked. Backflush the base brake system, fit the wheel and tire assemblies back, remove all support material and lower your vehicle. After pressing the brake pedal to the pads, fill the brake fluid reservoir, test the brake pressure and relocate the car once verified.
