2000 Dodge Dakota Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Steering Knuckle on 2000 Dodge Dakota?
A: Before servicing or repairing the steering knuckle, first raise and fully support the car and then take off the wheel and tire assembly. After that, disconnect the disc brake caliper, rotor, shield and ABS speed sensor. Take out the tie-rod from the steering knuckle arm and get rid of the hub/bearing and shock from the wheel assembly. Install the Spring Compressor DD-1278, slide it through the lower suspension arm, coil spring and upper mounting hole. Tighten the lower nut. If the coil spring is compressed, then take off the lower ball joint nut and pull the ball joint out of the knuckle using Remover C-4150A, likewise with the upper ball joint using Remover MB-991113, making certain not to destroy the ball joint seal. After removing the steering knuckle, set the new knuckle onto the upper and lower ball joints, thread on the nuts, tighten the lower nut to 127 Nm, the upper nut to 81 Nm and attach new cotter pins to secure them. Put the spring compressor aside and then set up the shock absorber, hub/bearing, ABS speed sensor, brake dust shield, rotor and caliper. Mount the tie rod back into the steering knuckle arm, replace the wheel and tire and finally eliminate the support to finish your vehicle.
