2001 Dodge Dakota Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Steering Knuckle on 2001 Dodge Dakota?
A: You should raise and support the car before undoing the wheel and tire assembly to access the steering knuckle. Following that, remove the disc brake caliper, rotor, shield, ABS speed sensor, tie-rod from steering knuckle arm and the hub/bearing from around the brake assembly. Take off the shock absorber and add Spring Compressor DD-1278 to the lower arm, coil spring and hole on the top of the shock housing, lock it in place by tightening the nut on the compressor. After you have removed the lower ball joint nut, use Remover C-4150A to free the ball joint from the knuckle and repeat the same step for the upper ball joint with Remover MB-991113 so as not to harm the ball joint seal. With the steering knuckle gone, position the replacement part over the upper and lower ball joints. Tighten the lower nut to 127 Nm (94 ft. lbs.), the upper nut to 81 Nm (60 ft. lbs.) and install new cotter pins. First, take off the spring compressor, add the shock absorber and then finish with the hub/bearing. At last, set the ABS speed sensor, brake dust shield, rotor, caliper and tire on, fasten the tie rod to the steering knuckle arm, attach the wheel, lower the vehicle and remove the support.
