Before servicing or repairing the oxygen sensor, avoid applying grease to its electrical connector and refrain from soldering its wiring harness, because the sensor draws its comparison oxygen from outside the exhaust through its pigtail wiring harness. You should wait for the exhaust manifold, exhaust pipes and catalytic converter to cool off, because they overheat when the engine is running. Raise the vehicle to have access underneath, remove the wire connection from the O2S sensor and be careful not to yank on the wire connecting the sensor to the vehicle. Use a special tool to get rid of the O2S sensor, then use the correct-sized tap to scrub the threads in the exhaust pipe. The O2S sensor has anti-seize compound on its threads when it is installed at the factory, so do not add any of your own. Install the O2S sensor, tighten it using 30 N.m (22 ft. lbs.) of extension force and afterward connect the O2S sensor wire connector before lowering the vehicle.
