2000 Jeep Wrangler Wheel Bearing Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair Wheel Bearings on a 216 RBI Axle on 2000 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Service of the 216 RBI Axle starts by first pulling out the axle shaft from the vehicle. Drill a shallow slot into the soft steel bearing retaining ring with a 3/8 inch drill bit, if possible stopping before you mark the axle as you drill. Place a cold chisel across the cutting part of the hole and tap hard until you can remove the retaining ring from the axle shaft. Connect a suitable Arbor Press to Splitter 1130, place it between the bearing and seal and press the unit bearing from the axle shaft. When done, slide the seal and retaining plate off the axle shaft. Before putting the axle shaft on, use a straight edge to test the plate for flatness and put on a new part if the first fails this check. Attach the retaining plate to the axle and put a layer of multipurpose grease on the seal's sealing side before you put the seal onto the axle with the cavity turned away. Spray lubricating grease on the bearing, making sure nothing drips on the shaft, slide the bearing on and line up the groove in the outer ring with the seal on the axle shaft. Using Installer 7913 and a shop press, fit the bearing onto the axle shaft, then follow by pressing the soft metal ring onto the axle, before finally setting the axle back in the vehicle.
