2001 Dodge Durango Catalytic Converter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service or Replace a Catalytic Converter on 2001 Dodge Durango?
A: Make sure the vehicle is up on a lift and secure and then cover the bolts and nuts with Mopar Rust Penetrant before allowing 5 minutes for penetration. Take out the clamps holding the catalytic converter flange to the exhaust pipe and the muffler or extension pipe. Now, take out the engine rear mount and the crossmember and then, when loosening the catalytic converter, you might also have to adjust other parts of the exhaust system. Look at the body of the stainless steel converter to ensure that it isn't bulging or warped and see if the attached heat shield is still in good position. If it looks like the catalyst's inside is damaged, tapping the spark plug attachment with a rubber mallet will often reveal its core. The catalytic converter goes onto the muffler or the extension pipe and here you place the adapter flange onto the exhaust pipe and secure it before adding the catalytic converter. If any of the remaining sections of the exhaust system was loosened when removing it, correct the tension using the proper method explained here. At the flange connections on the catalytic converter, put in the clamp and fasten the nuts to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) of torque. Drop the vehicle onto the ground, reinstall the crossmember, the rear engine mount and begin the engine to check the exhaust and avoid touching any body panels, changing the alignment as you go.
