Before you service your 3.7L/4.7L engine's catalytic converter, raise and support it, then douse all the exhaust nuts and bolts with Rust Penetrant by Mopar(R) and let it sit for 5 minutes. Unplug the connections to the
Oxygen Sensor and then remove the bolts that fasten the catalytic converter and the clamp to take it out. Remove the securement clamp and the grind any tack welds if you find them, then take out the catalytic converter which may also need you to loosen other parts of the exhaust system. Safely look at the converter body in stainless steel to see if it is bowing from heat and double-check if the heat shield is properly fixed and not bent. Tapping the bottom of the catalyst with a rubber mallet may show if the core is damaged. Before installation, remove any burrs from the catalytic converter pipe, put the converter into the
Exhaust Pipe and check that the alignment tang is located in the alignment slot. If some connections at the exhaust come loose when removing the system, tighten them in the correct manner. Thread the clamp and its nuts at the position where the catalytic converter connects to the extension tube; tighten the clamp nuts to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) torque. Make sure you check the exhaust system after lowering the vehicle, start the engine to find leaks and fix them or change the position of the exhaust as needed.
