2001 Dodge Neon Air Bag Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Safely Handle Air Bag Removal and Installation on 2001 Dodge Neon?
A: Before handling the passenger air bag module, first take out and isolate the battery's negative cable, then leave it disconnected for a minute so the reserve capacitor can drain. After that, detach the top cover of the instrument panel with your hands and remove the glove box door by screwing out three fasteners. Get rid of three screws on the passenger air bag cover and two more screws from the instrument panel under the windshield. After that, undo three of the air bag securing nuts, lift it up so the wire connector becomes exposed and release the 4-way connection tab by unlocking it and squeezing the lock. When dealing with an air bag you should put on rubber gloves, goggles and a long-sleeved shirt in case of any irritants. With the air bag facing the front, roll or fold it so it's over the instrument panel, close the door and fasten it shut with tape. Remove the negative cable off the battery, lift off the instrument panel cover and take out the glove box door just like we described before. Open the passenger air bag cover and unscrew the nuts. After that, unhook the 4-way wire connector as you did before. Attach the 4-way wire connector to the air bag and after seating it, roll the red tab forward to lock it in place. Loosen the air bag mount, then drop the air bag into place and clamp it with the three attaching nuts, securing them to 22 to 34 Nm (200 to 300 in. lbs.). Install two screws for the passenger air bag cover, on the lower front instrument panel and the three screws above, all at 2 Nm (20 in. lbs.). With the door back, insert three screws into it from underneath and tighten them to 2 Nm (20 in. lbs.). Never hook up the battery negative cable until the air bag system has already been checked and approved by a technician.
