2001 Dodge Neon Brake Caliper Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Rear Brake Caliper on 2001 Dodge Neon?
A: First, use a brake pedal holding tool to force the brake pedal in past its first inch which stops the master cylinder from feeding the brake hydraulic system and prevents any brake fluid from draining. Lift the vehicle until you can remove the rear wheel and tire from its assembly. With the banjo bolt removed from the brake hose and the caliper, inspect and get rid of any worn or damaged washers. Release the two guide pin bolts on the caliper before turning the top of the caliper behind the rotor and lifting it off the machined edge. When installing the caliper after new brake shoes, completely retract it into its bore and coat the adapter caliper slide abutments with Mopar Multi-purpose Lubricant or something similar. Ensure the caliper's lower edge is placed below the caliper slide abutment and then move the top part into place on the brake rotor. Never cross-thread the guide pin bolts as you install them and make sure to tighten them to a torque of 22 Nm (192 inch lbs.). Once the banjo fits are secure in the brake caliper, slip a washer on both sides of the hose and tighten it to 48 Nm or 35 ft. lbs. Fit the tire and wheel assembly back onto the mounting bolts, using 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.) to tighten the wheel nuts, lower your vehicle and finally let go of the brake pedal tool. As needed, empty the calipers and drive around to bed in the brake shoes and expel all the residual dirt from the brakes.
