2001 Jeep Wrangler Air Bag Control Module Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service an Air Bag Control Module on 2001 Jeep Wrangler?
A: At the beginning of the service process, block the battery system by cutting off the negative cable and then wait two minutes for the air bag system capacitor to discharge. Due to the impact sensor included in the air bag Control Module, the device should not be hit or kicked; otherwise, you might damage the sensor or alter its sensitivity. Should the module be dropped, it must be replaced immediately. Pull the carpet on either side of the floor panel transmission tunnel backward so you can reach the air bag Control Module forward of the center console. If the cycle has an Antilock Brake System, unscrew the left acceleration switch from its place on the mounting bracket. Lift the module up by undoing the four screws that hold it to the bracket, until the locator pins come out of the bracket. Pull the white Connecting Positive Assurance locks out about three millimeters and squeeze the latch tabs on the connector to unplug the cross body wire harness connector. After removing the air bag Control Module box, install it below the instrument panel and then fasten the wire harness connector to secure the latches and CPA locks. Put the module atop the mounting bracket, so that the locator pins connect and the label arrow is facing towards you. Secure all four screws to 14 Nm (125 in. lbs.), set up the acceleration switch if needed, cover the flooring and wait to reconnect the battery negative cable until the air bag system confirmation test has been completed following work on air bags.
