2002 Jeep Wrangler Air Bag Control Module Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Prepare an Air Bag Control Module for Diagnosing or Servicing Steering Components on 2002 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Before working on any part of the steering wheel or steering column or on the instrument panel, disconnect the negative cable from the car battery and wait for the air bag system capacitor to run out of charge. air bags employ an impact sensor and it is part of the air bag Control Module, so make sure never to step or hit this area. During service, if the module is dropped, it must be replaced. Before taking out the air bag control module, detach the battery negative cable and let the capacitor discharge if the air bag hasn't been triggered. To get to the air bag Control Module, pull the carpet aside on the two sides of the floor panel transmission tunnel. To use Anti-lock Brake System, eliminate the acceleration switch from its left edge on the mounting bracket. Take off the four screws holding in the air bag Control Module, lift the module to remove the locator pins from the mounting bracket and pull it to allow access to the connector. Remove the cross body wire harness connector by sliding the white Connector Positive Assurance locks out 3 millimeters and pulling the connector out with the latch tabs. For installation, set the new air bag Control Module under the instrument panel and attach the wire harness at its connector, making sure both the latches and CPA locks are locked. Place the module on the mounting bracket so that the locator pins are fitted and the arrow on the label moves forward. Attach and tighten all four screws to 14 Nm (125 in. lbs.), if the switch is available, reinstall it, lay down the carpet and keep the battery unconnected from its negative terminal until the air bag check is performed following the servicing of any air bag system part.
