2001 Jeep Wrangler Dimmer Switch Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service a Dimmer Switch on 2001 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable to disable the air bag system before you continue, so the air bag system capacitor can discharge for two minutes. Then, after removing the opening cover under the steering wheel, undo the screws fixing the lower shroud to the upper shroud of the steering column. Drop the steering column till it feels secure and make sure the tilt release lever isn't pulled back. Unoffer upper steering column shroud and lower steering column shroud. Take out the cross body wire harness connectors from the multi-function switch receptacles for both the left and right sides. Take out both screws holding the multi-function switch assembly to the top steering column housing and get the assembly out. Open the right multi-function switch housing by removing the two screws attaching it to the left multi-function switch mounting housing, then carefully pull the right switch control stalk out. Pull the combination flasher off the left multi-function switch. Installation requires sliding the combination flasher into the left multi-function switch, putting the right multi-function switch on top of the left one and sliding it to align the pins. Fasten the multi-function switch into place with the two small screws; tighten each screw to 2 Nm (20 in. lbs.). Connect the multi-function switch assembly to the top part of the steering column and hold it in place with two 2 Nm (20 in. lbs.) screws. Make sure the cross body wire harness is connected for both of the multi-function switches. Attach the shrouds on top and bottom of the steering wheel, so that the clips for the control stalk watershields are lined up. Fasten the upper and lower shroud ends together with two screws, tightening them both to 2 Nm (18 in. lbs.). If your steering wheel has a tilt column, raise it all the way up and factory-lock it before you leave the car. Place the opening cover onto the steering column and reattach the battery negative cable.
