2001 Jeep Wrangler Exhaust Pipe Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain an Exhaust Pipe on 2001 Jeep Wrangler?
A: It is important to wait until the exhaust system is cool, as close to the catalytic converter, as it gets very hot during operation. Never place flames from a torch near fuel lines. First, place the vehicle so the wheels can be removed and apply a coat of Mopar(r) rust penetrant to every nut and stud. After this, wait 5 minutes for the penetrant to soak in. Take out the oxygen sensors from both parts of the exhaust, unhook the exhaust pipe from the engine exhaust manifold and detach the catalytic converter from the muffler by loosening the nuts beneath. Let the exhaust pipe slide back toward the transmission support and as soon as the hanger unlocks, pull the pipe and its catalytic converter off the vehicle. To install, put the exhaust pipe and the catalytic converter into the vehicle, place the hanger for the exhaust pipe into the transmission support and insert the exhaust pipe into the exhaust manifold so it is in place, but do not tighten anything at this stage. Place the muffler flange against the catalytic converter flange, use the bolts and nuts to hold them together and don't tighten yet. Be sure to space the exhaust system at least 25 mm (1 inch) away from all other components. After that, tighten the muffler to catalytic converter flange retaining nuts to 28.5 Nm (21 ft. lbs.) and the exhaust pipe to exhaust manifold mounting bolts to 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.). After you're done, reinstall the oxygen sensors into the exhaust pipe and catalytic converter and then lower your vehicle.
