2001 Jeep Wrangler Catalytic Converter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service a Catalytic Converter on 2001 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Catalytic converters should be serviced only when the exhaust system is not hot and when you exercise caution not to get too close to it, since it becomes hot fast. Do not expose flammable fuel lines to the flames of a lit torch. First, hoist the vehicle in place and cover both the threads and nuts with Mopar(r) rust penetrant. Allow it to sit undisturbed for 5 minutes to get the proper effect. Pull out the oxygen sensors from the exhaust pipe and catalytic converter, disconnect the exhaust pipe from the engine's exhaust manifold and release the nuts holding the catalytic converter to its muffler flange. Start by pushing the exhaust pipe close to the transmission support until it pops out of the hanger, then remove both the exhaust pipe and the catalytic converter from your vehicle. Align the exhaust pipe and catalytic converter in the vehicle, fasten the hanger into the transmission support, fit the exhaust pipe onto the exhaust manifold, but do not tighten the bolts. Lay the muffler flange on top of the catalytic converter flange and insert the bolts and nuts, but don't tighten them at this time. Guarantee the exhaust system is aligned so there is at least 25 mm (1 inch) clearance between the shields and then seal with 28.5 Nm (21 ft. lbs.) for the muffler to catalytic converter flange retaining nuts and 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.) for the exhaust pipe on the manifold mounting bolts. Eliminate leaks by installing the oxygen sensors in the exhaust pipe and catalytic converter, then lower the automobile, close all doors and check for leaks when starting the car.
