2002 Dodge Dakota Shock Absorber Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain Your Front Shock Absorber on 2002 Dodge Dakota?
A: The first step to servicing the front shock is to unscrew the upper shock nut, remove the retainer and lift off the grommet on the shock absorber stud. Hold up the vehicle and remove the bolts at the lower suspension arm to remove the shock absorber. Before installing, replace the upper shock nut above the lock ring or put a little Mopar Lock 'N Seal or Loctite 242 on the existing nut. Put the shock absorber in, with the lower retainer, 'L' stamped and the grommet fitting over the stud. Insert the shock through the lower suspension arm and the upper hole. Turn the lower bolts by hand, then use a torque wrench to secure them to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.) When you've finished with the bottom grommet, lower the vehicle and add the upper grommet and retainer to the shock absorber stud with the U-shaped edge. After that, use a locking nut or put Mopar Lock 'N Seal or Loctite 242 on the current nut and secure it with 26 Nm (19 ft. lbs.).
