2002 Jeep Wrangler Crankshaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Crankshaft on 2002 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Begin your service of the crankshaft by removing oil pan, then the pump from the rear main bearing, then the vibration damper and finally the timing chain cover. Individually, identify and remove the bearing caps and bearings, lift the crankshaft out of the block and throw out both oil seals at the rear and front of the crankshaft. After you apply a little engine oil to the new upper seal lips, install the new upper rear bearing oil seal so that the white paint is facing the engine's rear. Put the crankshaft into the cylinder block, grease the new seal lips a bit and install the new lower rear bearing seal with the white painting facing the rear. Apply a 5 mm (0.20 inch) layer of Mopar Gasket Eliminator or its equivalent, to both sides of the rear main bearing cap, be sure not to overdo it and immediately connect the bearing cap to the cylinder block after assembly. Clamp the cap with the slot, dowel and bolts, ensuring no additional material is taken off and do not strike the rear cap more than twice to secure a safe engagement. Oil each of the cap bolts and then screw in the bearing caps, using alternating bolts to tighten each to 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.) torque. Replace the oil pump, timing chain cover and vibration damper in your vehicle. Put some Mopar Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant or another good sealant, onto the bearing cap for the oil passage, making sure enough sealant comes out to be wiped in the groove of the oil pan. Install the new front crankshaft oil seal and then quickly reattach the oil pan.
