2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser Brake Booster Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Vacuum Brake Booster on a Right-Hand Drive on 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Start the vacuum brake booster service or repair on a right-hand drive vehicle by first removing the air cleaner cover and connected hose and then the air cleaner housing. Take off the negative cable from the battery and separate it, then push the power distribution center to one side. Take out the refrigerant with a R-134a recovery machine, cut the refrigerant lines just above the upper engine torque strut and block off each opening to keep dirt out. Take out the master cylinder, then inside the vehicle, get rid of the silencer pad under the knee blocker and fold the knee blocker down. Strip back the surround of the instrument panel, find the brake pedal-to-power brake booster input rod attachment and unhook it with a small screwdriver; during reinstallation, use a new retaining clip. Take out the four bolts holding the power brake booster to the instrument panel, below the bottom of the dash near the brake pedal, then pull the booster away from the engine compartment. When installing, set the booster on the dash panel with the dash seal on the six booster studs and tighten the four nuts to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.). Spread Mopar Lubriplate-or another equivalent-on the brake pedal pin, attach the power brake booster input rod to the pin and add a new retaining clip. Put in a new brake lamp switch, discard the original one and reattach the knee blocker and silencer pad. Put in the master cylinder, link the refrigerant lines after rubbing PAG oil on the sealing O-rings and making sure they are free of rips and tighten the retaining fastener to 40 in. lbs. Let a R-134a refrigerant recovery machine take out the refrigerant, attach the negative battery cable and replace the air cleaner housing and cover with its hose to the throttle body. It is essential to feel a strong brake pedal before driving and to do a road test to ensure all brakes are functioning as they should.
