2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser Washer Pump Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Replace a Washer Pump in a Windshield Washer System on 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: When changing a windshield washer motor, start by popping the hood and taking off the negative battery cable. Insert the trim stick (special tool #C-4755) just enough to pop open the wiper arm nut cap, then take it off with the special tool. Afterward, slide the tool under the arm retaining nut, press down to remove it and use a side to side motion to detach the arm from the pivot. Then, lift off the cover of the right cowl by taking away the rear seal and the three push retainers. Take out the three washers from their reservoir holes, unplug the pump wire and pull out both of the washer hose connectors. Take the washer reservoir from beneath the cowl and dump its contents into a bucket. Take care to remove the pump from the reservoir and from the grommet, without harming the reservoir, then pull out the grommet. Whenever the pump is replaced or removed, add a new grommet to make sure it doesn't leak. Start by putting in the new grommet in the reservoir, ensuring the pump slides into it and then snap it in place tightly. Set the reservoir in the cowl area and put the supplied washer hoses onto the pump, matching the color of the hoses to the pump colors. Apply the pump wire connector, put in the three reservoir screws and tighten them to 8 Nm or 70 in. lbs. Slide on the proper cowl cover and connect it with the two push retainers before you put back the rear engine compartment seal. Before installing the front wiper arms, turn the wiper system on and lift the arms into the PARK position, making sure the driver's and passenger's blades meet the park line drawn vertically on the windshield. Place the arm on the pivot with an over/centered position, fit the wiper arm retaining nut and tighten to 21 Nm (190 in. lbs.) and then screw on the cap. Finally, attach the negative battery cable to its original spot, close the hood and carefully watch the vehicle's systems in operation.
