2003 Dodge Durango Brake Drum Parts and Q&A
Q: How Can a Brake Drum Be Machined on a Drum Lathe to Ensure Optimal Surface Finish and Prevent Taper on 2003 Dodge Durango?
A: For hat rotors, the brake drum on the drum can be machined with a lathe, but the first cut should be a maximum of 0.12 to 0.20 mm (0.005 to 0.008 inch) to prevent taper or differences in surface finish and a final cut of 0.025 to 0.038 should be used for best surface appearance. See that the drum in hat is safely attached in the lathe before moving on to machining and apply a damper strap over it to reduce engine shake and avoid small imperfections on the surface. Maximum diameter for drum braking surface is stamped or cast inside the drum in hat rotor, so the drum must be replaced if machining would make it go beyond that limit.
