2003 Dodge Durango Brake Caliper Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair a Brake Caliper on 2003 Dodge Durango?
A: The first step in caliper servicing is to drain out the brake fluid from the caliper. Don't take out the pistons without protection: put a block of wood between the recess and the piston using a C-clamp and use padded wood with linens that are one inch thick on the other piston. Count on several short bursts of pressure in the hard lines to allow the first piston to move gently, ensuring you don't keep applying pressure or it could break. When the first piston is out, pull back the sleeve again and place a C-clamp and wood block into the empty bore. Move the second piece over and perform the air process to pull out its piston. Choose the right pry tool and carefully take off both the dust boots and seals from the piston without damaging the bore. Pull the boot seals and the caliper mounting bolt bushings out with your hands and then remove the caliper bleed screw. Apply clean brake fluid to all caliper parts except the piston and seal; never use gas or other similar solvents on them because they can cause damage. Check that the piston is smooth and free of dirt; if you see cracks or scratches, change it and don't try to improve a damaged surface. When changing the piston, choose the same type as you cannot use phenolic resin and steel pistons together. Polish the bore with a brake hone for slight steam leaks, but replace the caliper if it's badly corroded or brake hone causes the bore size to go over 0.025 mm (0.001 inch) larger. A clean and dry assembly area is required. Lubricate the pistons, seals and bores with fresh brake fluid and make sure the new piston seals are completely fitted in place. Give the lip of the boot a light coating of silicone grease, push it on the piston and push it into place where it is secure. Press the first piston snugly into the caliper body with Handle C-4171 and Install C-3716-A. After that, add the second piston and dust boot, lubricate both edges and rings of the caliper holes with Mopar brake grease or Dow Corning 807 grease, insert the boot seals into the caliper sealing bores and align them in the middle. After that, fit the mounting bolt bushings, with the seal facing into the bushing grooves and put the caliper bleed screw back in place.
