2003 Dodge Neon Air Bag Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Safely Handle Air Bag Removal and Installation for Both Non-Deployed and Deployed Units on 2003 Dodge Neon?
A: Begin by unhooking and separating the negative cable from the car's battery, then give the reserve capacitor one full minute to discharge. After that, open the instrument panel top cover, unscrew the three screws on the glove box door and remove the door from the instrument panel. Bust open three screws on the top of the passenger air bag cover and two more screws at the front of the lower instrument panel. After that, remove the three nuts securing the air bag to the support, lift the air bag so the connector is at the end nearest the access door and pull apart the connector. Use rubber gloves, goggles and a long-sleeved shirt whenever you handle an air bag, in order to protect your skin and eyes from surface debris. Place or fold the air bag so that it goes lower than the instrument panel, shut the door over it and cover the opening with tape. Pull off the battery negative connection, lift off the instrument panel lid, remove the glove box door and take out the screws at the opening to the air bag for the front passenger, as explained before. Unscrew the three nuts that join the air bag, lift it up so the wire is visible and then disconnect it. While installing, fit the passenger air bag wire connector into the air bag and drop it into the instrument panel in its proper location. Install the support structure air bag attaching nuts with a torque from 22 to 34 Nm (200 to 300 in. lbs.). Put the two screws for the passenger air bag cover into the front lower instrument panel and tighten them to 2 Nm (20 in. lbs.). Then, set up the three screws for the cover on top of the instrument panel, giving each a tightening of 2 Nm (20 in. lbs.). Attach the glove box door, secure it with three screws tightened to 2 Nm (20 in. lbs.) and then put on the instrument panel top cover. You should not attach the battery negative cable until the air bag system has been evaluated and tested.
