2003 Dodge Sprinter 3500 A/C Expansion Valve Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair an A/C Expansion Valve on 2003 Dodge Sprinter 3500?
A: Service of the A/C expansion valve begins by removing the refrigerant from the system and then disconnecting the negative battery cable. Take out the nut holding the suction and liquid lines to the expansion valve stud and next unhook the two lines. Remove and dispose of any seals on the fittings and then cover the opened liquid and suction lines, plus the two expansion valve ports with plugs or tape. After that, unscrew the expansion valve from the evaporator tube tapping plate by removing the two bolts and remove the expansion valve. Remove the seals covering the evaporator inlet and outlet tube openings and place them over both openings of the expansion valve. To install, strip off the tape or plugs from the fittings at the tapping plate evaporator inlet and outlet and both ports at the back of the expansion valve. First, cleanly lubricate newly added rubber O-ring seals with refrigerant oil and then put them into the inlet and outlet fittings for the tapping plate evaporator. Attach the expansion valve onto these fittings, then use the two bolts to secure and foil it tight to 5 N.m (45 in.lbs.). Take off the tape or plugs from both expansion valve ports and the ends of the liquid and suction lines, add clean refrigerant oil to the new rubber O-rings, then insert them on the fittings. Attach both fittings back to the expansion valve and then use a torque to tighten the nut securing the suction line and liquid line fittings to the valve's stud to 10 N.m (89 in. lbs.). Connect the negative terminal of the battery again, remove all the refrigerant and charge the refrigerant afterward.
