How to Maintain and Fix a Drive Belt on 2003 Jeep Liberty?

The first thing to do when servicing the drive belt is disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Turn the belt tensioner all the way inwards until it stops, remove the belt and then rotate the tensioner into the free-arm position as you turn it slowly. Guide the new belt around all the needed pulleys, but skip the idler pulley, because routing it incorrectly can cause the engine to overheat because the water pump moves in reverse. After you have routed the belt, rotate the tensioner arm until the tensioner contacts its end stop, then send the belt around the idler pulley and wait for the tensioner to move into the belt and adjust itself under all the pulleys. Also check the belt wear indicator; it should show no more than 24 mm (0.94 inches) between the tang and the housing stop.
