2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser Air Bag Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Address Issues with an Air Bag After Deployment or Malfunction on 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Should a deployed air bag need servicing, the entire back of the seat, along with any broken pieces, must be changed. Replacing a nondeployed seat air bag should only be done when it is found to be malfunctioning. First, push the driver's seat all the way forward and then lift the hood. Let the negative cable from the battery go disconnected for two full minutes to discharge the reserve capacitor. Take out the front seat from your car and remove the back panel hidden behind the driver or front passenger seat. Pop out the seat back cover J-strap from the side of the seat that faces the roof, the side facing the floor and from the air bag side. Push the small tabs on either side in, while sliding the yellow tab down and pulling the connector far from the module to disconnect it. After taking out the nuts, grab the side of the seat back cover near the air bag, pull it off the frame to make room for getting at the air bag. Gently free the seat air bag studs from the nylon sleeve and remove the air bag, making sure not to rip the sleeves. During installation, position the seat air bag connector down toward the seat cushion. Insert the air bag into the sleeve and make sure the mounting studs fit into the sleeve's holes before you finish placing it in the sleeve. Before torquing the retaining nuts, put the side air bag inside the nylon sleeve first. Tighten the nuts with a force of 10.7 Nm (94.7 in. lbs.). Place the upper seat back trim cover and cushion over the frame, connect the seat air bag's electrical connector and lock the tab into place. Add the seat back trim cover, make sure the J-straps are back in place and then put on the plastic back panel using four screws in the top mounting spots. After that, put the front seat in, shut the hood and test both the vehicle and system before putting the negative cable back.
