2004 Dodge Durango Drive Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Drive Shaft by Adjusting the Propeller Shaft Angle on 2004 Dodge Durango?
A: Raise and support the vehicle on the axles at a level position so that the wheels and propeller shaft are able to turn without restriction. With universal joint snap rings in place, the inclinometer's base may not sit flat. Rotate the shaft until the cap of the transmission/transfer case output yoke bearing faces the ground. Whenever you measure, stand on one side and take the distance front to rear. Position Inclinometer 7663 on the yoke bearing cap or pinion flange ring beside the shaft, with sight glass aligned with the shaft middle line, marking the moment when the bubble stands still as A, the Output Yoke Angled measured in degrees. Then, move the propeller shaft 90 degrees to the next side and set Inclinometer 7663 on the yoke bearing cap so it is parallel to the shaft with the bubble in the center in the sight glass, to read measurement C that can also be taken at the eave. To get the transmission output operating angle, take away the smaller figure (C) from the larger one (A). Afterward, turn the propeller shaft 90 degrees and place Inclinometer 7663 on the pinion yoke bearing cap to make the bubble in the sight glass straight, reading off measurement B that reveals the input yoke shaft angle. Put simply, minus the smaller figure from the larger to come up with the axle Input Operating Angle (C minus B). A good cancellation of U-joint angles occurs when they are within 1 degree and the operating angles are less than 3 degrees with at least 1/2 of one degree of continuous angle for the propeller shaft.
