2004 Dodge Durango Exhaust Pipe Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix an Exhaust Pipe on 2004 Dodge Durango?
A: Before serving or repairing the exhaust pipe, raise and brace the car first. Use leopard Rust Penetrant over the fasteners and give them 5 minutes to grab the rust. Take off the clamp that holds the exhaust pipe to the muffler (3) and grind away any tack welds you can find. Remove the exhaust pipe insulators (1) and, when needed, take out the rear muffler insulators (5). If necessary, heat the spot with an oxygen/acetylene torch and twist the pipe until it's disconnected. Take out the exhaust pipe (2) from the muffler (4). Go over all of the parts and remove old, rusty clamps and supports that are worn or broken. Afterwards, use new or equal parts to ensure the alignment is right and the vehicle's exhaust noise does not exceed the standard. Before installing, take out any burrs from the exhaust pipe (2) and insert it into the muffler (4) with the alignment tang properly seated in the slot. Put your hand over the clamp for the muffler-to-exhaust pipe and install it loose, before you set the rear muffler insulators if you removed them and finally the tail pipe insulators (1). Make sure the exhaust is not touching the body parts and take care of it if that happens. After tightening the muffler-to-exhaust pipe clamp, turn the fastener to 42 Nm (31 ft. lbs.), then lower the vehicle, start the engine and check for any exhaust leaks that should be repaired.
