2004 Dodge Ram 1500 Starter Motor Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair a Starter Motor on 2004 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Service the starter motor by first cutting off power from the battery and then lifting and supporting the vehicle. If your vehicle has 4WD and some transmissions, open the battery casing and get to the lower starter bolt by removing the 2 support bracket bolts attached to the transmission. When a manual transmission is removed, unscrew 2 items, one nut and one bolt, but for an automatic transmission, unscrew 3 items, all bolts. Move the starter motor forward until the front of its housing is clear of the other housing, all while running your hands under the starter motor to avoid it hanging from the wire harness. Pull the starter motor towards the back, so the nose tilts down, grab the nut for the positive wire connector and unscrew it off the battery terminal stud, then remove the wire connector eyelet. Lift the connector end of the battery positive wire harness from the solenoid terminal connector and pull out the starter motor. Connect a wire from the solenoid to the starter motor, attach the battery cable to the solenoid stud, install and fasten the battery cable eyelet nut according to torque specifications and be sure the starter motor does not rattle from the wire harness when installed. If automatic, fix the starter motor to the transmission and slide its cooler tube bracket into position before fixing both bolts tight according to Torque Specifications. Lastly, bring the car down on jacks and fasten the negative battery cable once more.
