2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Fuel Rail Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service a Fuel Rail on 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: To work on the fuel rail, first let off the pressure by taking off the fuel tank filler tube cap and properly releasing the fuel system pressure. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery and take off the air tube on the top of the throttle body, as some cars might also have air cleaner ducts that must come off. Push the red tab on all six fuel injector connectors toward you, then pull the connector down to disconnect. If the factory wiring harness is not tagged, remember the location of each connector. If there are nuts holding the oxygen sensor to the studs, remove them, then pull out the clip and unhook the fuel supply line from the fuel rail at its latch. Remove the throttle cable, speed control cable and automatic transmission cable from the throttle body if you have one and take off the routing bracket at the intake manifold. Before removing the fuel rail, clean the dirt out of the fuel injectors on the intake manifold and rock the rail until it slides out as the injectors pass through the machined holes. During fuel injector installation, first clean each injector bore, then put a little clean engine oil on each injector O-ring before fixing them in place. Tighten the bolts that attach the fuel rail to 11.3 Nm (100 ± 25 in. lbs.), attach all the fuel injectors' electrical connectors and check that they are secure. Secure the gas line and the compressor connector clip, fit a cap over the pressure test port fitting if available and put the bracket for the routing cable back in place. Afterward, connect the throttle, speed control and automatic transmission wiring, then install the clip nuts for the oxygen sensor wiring (only do this when necessary). With the air tube installed again, put the cap on the fuel tank, plug the negative battery cable back in, operate the engine and check there are no leaks.
