2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Parking Brake Shoe Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Parking Brake Shoe on 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Before you work on or repair the parking brake shoe, lock the park brake lever and raise your vehicle. The following sequence is to remove the rear wheel, discard the tire too and take out the caliper and anchor together. Take the rubber plug out of the splash shield at the back of the rear disc brake. If you need to, pull in the parking brake by using a brake adjuster tool at the top of the star wheel and turning it. First, take the rotor off the axle hub flange, then remove the lower shoe to shoe spring or adjuster spring with needle nose pliers and the upper shoe to spring or return spring with brake pliers. Push the clip ends so that they meet, slide the clip downward until the pin head clears the notch's edge and take out the clip and pin. After that, open the box up and remove the shoes and adjuster. Wash each brake element such as the support plate exterior, with water and a clean cloth and don't use other cleaners. Take off light rust and scale on the brake shoe contact pads using fine sandpaper. Brake shoes with rivets should be replaced when the pads reach 0.78 mm (1/32 inch) below the rivets and shoes with lining should be replaced once the lining thins to 1.6 mm (1/16 inch). If shoes appear bent and connected on only a single side, that's a sign they need to be replaced. Meanwhile, any drum with runout or a tapered shape should be carefully checked. If the star wheel or main threads are damaged or the components are very rusted, you should replace the adjuster screw assembly. Replace worn, collapsed or significantly distorted brake springs and retainer components and if there is some brake drag, replace the springs because heat has weakened them. Check the brake shoe contact pads on the support plate and change the support plate if any pads have become worn, rusted or if the support plate is bent or misshapen. When installing, line the shoes on the splash shield with pins and clips, making sure they are secure and working in the park brake actuator. Place the loosened adjuster screw assembly into the shoes, having the notched ends fit into them and ensure the star wheel is well aligned with the hole in the shield. Use needle nose pliers to link the lower shoe to the shoe spring/adjuster spring and brake pliers to join the upper shoe to the shoe spring/return spring. After putting in the rotor and caliper anchor assembly, install the anchor bolts to 90 - 115 Nm (66 - 85 ft. lbs.). Pull up the park brake lever to unblock the system, adjust the parking brake shoes and put the wheel and tire back in place. Raise the vehicle and use the parking brake to check if it stops the vehicle properly.
