2004 Jeep Liberty Axle Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair an 8 1/4 Inch Axle Shaft on 2004 Jeep Liberty?
A: To service and repair the rear axle shaft on a 8 1/4 inch axle, first place the transmission in Neutral, then raise the vehicle. Next, take out the wheel and tire and then remove the brake drum. Take out the housing cover and drain the gear oil before turning the case to find and remove the lock screw and shaft. Once you've pushed the axle shaft in, attach a grip wrench to pull and free it, so that you do not damage the bearing and seal. Inspecting the axle shaft seal will show if there are any signs of leaks and inspect the part where the bearing connects with the gear for damage, including brinelling, galling and pitting. While installing, apply gear lubricant to the inside of the bearing and to the seal lip, insert the axle shaft through the seal and bearing and slide it into the side gear splines. Slide the C-lock onto the end axis and then push it till it is seated in the side gear. After that, put the pinion shaft into the differential case through the thrust washers and differential pinions, ensuring the hole on the shaft matches the hole on the case and fit the lock screw, using Loctite on the threaded end and tighten it to 11 Nm (8 ft. lbs.). When complete, fit the cover to the drum, pour lubricant to the bottom of the hole, fit the brake drum, join the wheel and tire assemblies and lower the vehicle by removing the support.
