2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Ball Joint Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Ball Joint Seal Boot on 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Before servicing or repairing the lower ball joint seal boot, you should take out the steering knuckle from the vehicle. Make use of a proper tool to pry the seal boot away from the ball joint. Carefully remove any used grease from the outer area of the ball joint beam. When doing the installation, keep the upward lip of the seal boot on the outer edge pointed away from the control arm, so it doesn't catch heat. The upward lip of the ball joint seal boot should be facing out as you put it over the stem. Twist the seal boot by hand over the ball joint shaft first. Over the outer diameter of the sealing boot, use Position Installer, Special Tool 6758, to push the boot down until it's flat against the lower control arm and afterwards, remove the tool. Take off the ball joint's headless grease fitting and put on a standard zirc-type grease fitting, but save the previous fitting for later. You should grease the ball joint with a special kind of grease before attaching the knuckle. Try not to lubricate it after reassembly, as this can harm the seal. Use the hand-operated pump grease gun to stuff the seal boot with Lube or equivalent, allowing grease to escape past the ball joint stem. After complete filling, rub away any additional grease on the outside. In the end, change out the standard grease fitting for the headless one and use it to prevent further grease application. Then install the steering knuckle.
