2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Coil Springs Parts and Q&A
Q: How Are Coil Springs Removed and Installed on 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Before removing the coil spring, raise the vehicle and get rid of the tires and wheels at the back. After that, unbolt the watts link bell crank from the hub of the axle, unbolt the lower cushion retainers from the rear of the axle and remove the stabilizer bar. Put a transmission jack or similar support under the center of the axle and then take out the shock absorber's main nuts and bolts on the axle. Place the transmission jack beneath the coil springs, let it down gradually and then take out the coil and rubber isolators. For each coil, put a rubber isolator on its ends, making certain the rubber fingers wrap around the coil and the rubber abutment butts up against the flat part of the coil. Both ends of the coil spring look the same which means you can put them on top or the bottom. Place the coil springs on top of the axle perches, checking that the flat side of each top coil points to an imaginary line drawn parallel to the beam and that the upper coils are located near the outer side of the vehicle. While the transmission jack supports the coil springs, lift it enough so the springs go into their slots on the body of the vehicle. Then, with the transmission jack and coil springs in place, lower it enough that the shock absorber lower mounting bolts can be slid into their brackets and support eyes along the axle. Slide the washer and nuts onto the bolts at the bottom of each shock, tighten to 88 Nm (65 ft. lbs.) and finally remove the jack. Put the lower ends of the stabilizer bar cushion retainers into the slots on the back of the axle, tilt the opposite end of the retainer to slide on the mounting bolts and tighten the bolts to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.). Be sure to turn the bell crank so that the words "BACK UP" are legible over the axle when you install it. Place the watts link bell crank near the center of the axle and tighten a nut to a torque of 149 Nm (110 ft. lbs.) on the bolt from the front of the linkage, securing the washer with the bolt. The last step is to add the rear tire and wheel assemblies, tighten all wheel nuts to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.), bring down the vehicle and make sure the vehicle height matches the curb size when parked.
