2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser Ball Joint Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Ball Joint Seal-Lower Ball Joint on 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Before working on the lower ball joint, you should take off the knuckle. Use a proper tool such as a screwdriver, to take the seal boot off the ball joint. Clean away any old grease found around the stem of the ball joint. With the sealing boot in place, the upward lip should rest outward so that it shields heat coming from the pivot bolt. Starting at the edge nearest you, push the seal onto the ball joint stud. Place Installer, Special Tool 6758, over the sealing boot and firmly press by hand until the seal boot covers the top surface of the lower control arm. Remove the ball joint's headless grease fitting and put in a standard zirc grease fitting; keep the old headless fitting as it will be needed for re-use after. Applying lubricant to the ball joint first keeps the seal unharmed while the air is being pushed out; but lubricating afterwards can cause the seal to break. Using your hand, pump Multi-Mileage Lube into the ball joint boot until it runs out past the stem. Clean off any extra grease that comes out. Get rid of the standard zirc-type grease fitting and attach the headless grease fitting to the ball joint so you don't have to lubricate it anymore. Once you have everything else ready, install the knuckle.
