2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Wheel Bearing Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Wheel Bearing and Hub on 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: First, remove the entire wheel bearing and hub with the steering knuckle from the car to allow work on the front wheel bearing. Spin the hub so that each wheel stud matches the notch in the bearing retainer plate, then take out Remover, Special Tool C-4150A, to remove the studs. Turn the hub to ensure the stud holes are correct, then use Special Tool 1130 to separate the bearing. Make sure the nuts are tightened by hand when you install the Bearing Splitter. Put the steering knuckle down, with the splitter installed, in an arbor press, then push the hub out of the wheel bearing with the Remover/Installer, Special Tool 6644-2, on the small end of the hub. Removing the bearing splitter and the three plates that hold the bearing retainer will allow the plate to be taken off as well. Once in place, be sure to use the Remover/Installer, Special Tool MB-990799, to press the wheel bearing out of the steering knuckle using the arbor press. After putting the Bearing Splitter, Special Tool 1130, between the flange and the bearing race, press out the hub with Remover/Installer, Special Tool 6644-2. Wipe the grooves inside the steering knuckle clean before fixing it into the arbor press so that the Installer, Special Tool C-4698-2, supports the knuckle. Position the new wheel bearing where it will bridge the bore in the hub and then use Installer, Special Tool 5052, to fully press down the bearing. After removing the knuckle from the press, place the bearing retainer plate on the studs, use only original or identical bolts and tighten them to 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.). Insert the studs into the holes of the hub flange with the mounting surface up, utilize Special Tool C-4698-1 to secure the hub and press each stud down. Slide the steering knuckle in the press with the Remover/Installer, Special Tool MB-990799, making sure the inner race is held and then push the hub into the wheel bearing until it is tightly seated. Once you have removed the dust remember to make sure the hub is working freely, without rubbing or binding, before replacing the steering knuckle.
