2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Brake Pad Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Repair Brake Pads on 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Start the process by elevating the car, removing the front tire and wheel and then working on the front brake pads. The following step is to remove both guide pin bolts from inside the caliper and disconnect the disc brake caliper, holding it out of the way so the brake hose is not extended. Take out the brake shoes from the disc brake caliper adapter. When removing dust from the disc brake shoes, make sure you handle it safely, since it may hold asbestos fibers; do not grind or sand the lining without making sure it is clean enough and avoid using compressed air or dry brushing. Alternatively, dampen each part with a spray of water, remove the water with a damp cloth and throw away the cloth and any leftovers in an impermeable container that meets OSHA and EPA requirements. Examine the brake shoes to see if they're not even or if the wear areas have worn too far and observe how near the wear indicators are to the brake rotors. If it's needed, take off the disc brake shoes to determine the lining thickness; front shoes must be changed out when the lining is about 7.95 mm (5/16 inch) and rear shoes should be replaced when about 9.0 mm (3/8 inch). Should you replace the shoes, remember to replace all of them on that brake and the ones on the other side, too. During installation, slide the brake shoes into the shims connected to the abutment clipped to the caliper brake adapter, making sure the shoe marked with the wear indicator is on the inner side. Fully retract the caliper piston and then put the caliper over the brake shoes so it doesn't damage the boots on the caliper guide pins. Bring the bolt holes on the caliper guide pin bolts in line with the guide pins, fit the bolts and tighten to a torque of 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.). Join the wheel and tire back together, tightening the bolts to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Finally, lower the car. Press the brake pedal a few times to allow the brakes to grip the rotors, see if the brake fluid is at the correct level and use the car to clear any remaining foreign material from the brake system.
