2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser Brake Pad Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair Brake Pads on the Front Wheels on 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: To do this job, raise and support the vehicle first. Take out the wheel mounting nuts, then get rid of the tire and wheel unit. After that, remove the two brake caliper guide pin bolts and move the disc brake caliper away from the disc brake adapter, keeping the brake hose short and safe. Removing the brake pads from the disc brake caliper adapter is necessary. Asbestos can be hazardous, so clean the car with caution; don't sand or grind brake linings and wipe parts with moist cloth while disposing of asbestos parts appropriately. Look for changes in brake pad shape and outdoor conditions so that the clearance between the wear indicators and the brake rotors matches the manufacturer's recommendations. A brake pad should be no thicker than 7.95 mm (5/16 inch), so change them when you notice they have reached this thickness. Be sure to change the pads inside and outside the caliper and return any pads not requiring replacement to where they were first installed. When installing, slide each brake pad into one abutment shim clipped in the disc brake caliper adapter, with the pad containing the wear indicator next to the brake caliper. Pull the caliper piston all the way in, then place the caliper over the brake pads, being careful not to hurt the caliper's guide pin boots. Place the caliper guide pin bolt holes next to the guide pins, insert the bolts and tighten them up to 35 Nm or 26 ft. lbs. Secure the wheel to the vehicle and tighten the bolts at 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.), before settling the vehicle back to its normal height. After three times of pedaling the brake, adjust the brake fluid and make sure the pads are fully on the rotor, then test the vehicle on the road to observe how it brakes.
