- Q: How to Safely Remove and Install a Steering Wheel on 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser?A: Remember to disconnect the negative battery cable and isolate it, then wait at least two minutes to let the system capacitor release its charge before touching anything in the ignition system. Place the front wheels in line while getting rid of the driver air bag. Separate the horn connector at the Clock Spring, hold the steering wheel, loosen the steering column retainer bolt and insert it again to a point where about 13 millimeters of bolt can be seen. Put the wheel puller over the steering shaft and with the steering wheel straight ahead, pull the wheel off the shaft. Should you replace the steering wheel, unplug the speed control connector and remember how the horn contacts are positioned before taking them out. Come apart both the horn contacts and the mounting screws attached to the speed control switch, then open the speed control master switch and disconnect it. Secure the rear cover to the steering wheel by putting on the screws included. Should the model support speed control, fit the speed control switch and the three mounting screws to the motor's base. Make sure the white contact of the horn is connected to the left while the black contact is connected to the right and wire the speed control if your system has one. Check that the turn signal stalk is set straight, then make sure the front wheels are upright, before you feed the air bag wiring leads through the top hole in the steering wheel. Bring the steering wheel up against the steering column shaft and secure it with a tightened retaining bolt. Reattach the connections for the horn and then put in the driver air bag. Once you finish the instruments, join the battery ground terminal again, check the air bag System and test if all column-mounted parts work before resetting the radio and clock if needed.
