2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Timing Belt Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Repair a Timing Belt on 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: You should start by cutting off the negative battery cable and then take out the upper and lower timing belt covers before continuing with the job. Whenever adjusting timing marks, always use the crankshaft to rotate the engine, never try to rotate the camshaft after removing the timing belt. Move the crankshaft until the TDC mark on the oil pump housing lines up with the TDC mark on the crankshaft sprocket, placed on the rear of the sprocket edge, to make sure the camshaft timing marks are not off alignment. Use the lock bolt to loosen the tensioner and turn the pulley's top plate counterclockwise using a 6 mm Allen wrench until you have sufficient slack to take off the belt. Swap out your timing belt and if tracking issues harmed it, change the belt and bracket/pulley unit as one piece. After that, remove each camshaft sprocket with Special Tool 6847 while holding the sprocket firmly and using the removed sprocket bolts to support the camshaft. When working with the crankshaft sprocket, insert Special Tool 6793 and C-4685-C2 to remove it. Before installing, align the crankshaft sprocket using Special Tool 6792 to the original depth as this will prevent timing belt and engine damages. After you set the timing belt, install the upper and lower front timing belt covers. Don't use impact force on the sprocket again, secure them using Special Tool 6847 and tighten the center bolt to 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.). Put the crankshaft sprocket on TDC by placing it with the arrow in the same alignment as the arrow on the oil pump housing. The exhaust camshaft sprocket should be below the intake camshaft sprocket and, as for both camshafts, their arrows should point up. Put in the timing belt at the crankshaft, go around the water pump sprocket, then to the idler pulley, around the camshaft sprockets and on to the tensioner. Align the cam sprocket's marks by rotating the outer cam 1.5 times clockwise and adjust the belt as needed. Turn the top plate of the tensioner pulley in a counterclockwise direction until its setting notch lines up with the spring and tighten the tensioner lock bolt to 25 Nm (220 inch lbs.). Once you remove the tools, spin the crankshaft tightly clockwise two complete times to insert the belt and double-check that both timing marks are perfectly aligned. If the spring tang isn't within tolerance, continue with spring tensioning. Installing the upper and lower front timing belt covers should come next and then you should connect the negative cable to the battery.
