2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Timing Belt Tensioner Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Timing Belt Tensioner on 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Removal of the timing belt and its idler pulley is required as a first step to service or repair the timing belt tensioner and its pulley. While you remove the bolt, use Special Tool 6847 to hold the camshaft sprocket and then remove both sprockets. Afterward, take the rear timing belt cover off by taking out its screws. Disconnect the lower bolt that links the timing belt tensioner assembly to the engine and remove the entire tensioner assembly. To install, get the timing belt tensioner assembly in the right place near the engine and bolt it with just the lower bolt, but don't tighten it yet. For correct alignment, secure one of the engine bracket mounting bolts (M10) only about 5-7 turns into the upper location of the tensioner assembly. Set the lower mounting bolt of the tensioner to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.), then take out the upper alignment bolt. Then, put on the rear timing belt cover along with its bolts and tighten the mounting screw of the timing belt idler pulley with 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) torque. Never use an impact wrench when tightening camshaft sprocket bolts to protect the locating dowel pin. Hold the camshaft sprockets with Special Tool 6847 and tighten the bolts to 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.), before installing the timing belt.
