2005 Dodge Dakota Catalytic Converter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Install a Catalytic Converter on a 3.7L or 4.7L Engine on 2005 Dodge Dakota?
A: Before removing your car's catalytic converter, support and lift the vehicle, spray Mopar(R) Rust Penetrant on all exhaust bolts and leave it for 5 minutes to work. Take out of the car the electrical connectors from the oxygen sensor, the bolts between the catalytic converter and exhaust manifold (5) and the connection clamp (1) between the catalytic converter and the pipe. Should tack welds be present, grind them first, then remove the catalytic converter by disconnecting other parts of the exhaust system. Make sure the stainless steel housing of the converter isn't bulging or distorted from heat and check the attached heat shield isn't bent or loose. Damage inside the catalyst may be found by hitting the bottom with a rubber mallet. To install, ensure that the pipe of the catalytic converter is smooth, slips the catalytic converter into the exhaust pipe and see that the alignment gut is fully inside the alignment slot. Because you need a new set for every catalytic converter replacement, fit a clamp and new nuts onto the extension pipe where it attaches to the catalytic converter. Tighten the clamp nuts to achieve a torque of 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.). After softening the vehicle's suspension, start the engine and look for exhaust leaks. If you spot any, make repairs and be sure the exhaust is not in contact with any part of the body panels, adjusting it if it is.
