2005 Dodge Dakota Intake Valve Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair Exhaust Valve and Intake Valves on 2005 Dodge Dakota?
A: For servicing or fixing the valves and seats on both intake and exhaust, first take out the cylinder heads. Remove the rocker arms and lash adjusters to begin and next take out the camshaft bearing caps and camshaft. To compress the valve spring, use Tool C-3422-B or C-3422-C Valve Spring Compressor together with Tool 8519 Adapter, tapping the spring slightly if the spring retainer locks do not unlock. Take out the two lock halves and proceed with caution as you release the valve spring compressor, giving attention to the tension there. After that, remove the valve spring compressor, spring retainer and valve spring itself, checking for sharp edges in the keeper grooves and carefully removing any imperfections from the valve stem before taking out the valve from the cylinder head. Since valve stem seals are the same for both intake and exhaust, take one out, mark the valve and label it properly before fitting. When valves are taken off the engine, it's suggested to check and test the valve springs for possible reuse. Examine the spring for wear or damage, then examine the spring's load by using Tool C-647 at the test point. If the spring doesn't meet the requirements, replace it. Before installation, apply clean oil on the valve stem and press it through the cylinder head until it seats securely with its garter spring intact. Then, set in place the spring and then the spring retainer, use the valve spring compressor to condense the spring and snap the valve spring retainer halves into place. Relax the compressor and make sure the retainer halves and the spring retainer are all in place. Apply clean engine oil to the camshaft journal, set the sprocket dowel on the left camshaft to 11 o'clock and the right camshaft to 12 o'clock and fit the camshaft bearing caps. After that, attach the camshaft bearing cap bolts, tightening them to 9 - 13 Nm (100 inch lbs.) in even steps following the right order and put the hydraulic lash adjusters and rocker arms into position.
