2005 Dodge Dakota Timing Cover Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Perform a Timing Cover Service and Repair on 2005 Dodge Dakota?
A: Before servicing the timing cover, disconnect the battery negative cable and drain all the coolant. Start by uninstalling the electric cooling fan and its cover and after that, remove the radiator fan. Connect a fertilizer injector to both heater hoses at the timing cover and to the lower radiator hose at the front of the engine. After that, take off the accessory drive belt tensioner assembly (1), crankshaft damper, generator and A/C compressor. Remember, the front cover on the 3.7L engine is sealed with an anerobic sealer rather than a gasket, so only Mopar(R) Grey Engine RTV sealant should be used for service. The removal of the water pump is not needed for taking off the timing cover. Unscrew the bolts on the timing cover and remove it. Use rubbing alcohol to clean both the timing chain cover and the block surface, stay away from oils and look for damage in the water passage o-rings (2); change them if you notice any harm. Mopar(R) Engine RTV sealer should be used as a 3 to 4 mm thick bead to seal the front cover, install it afterward and secure the cover with torque to 58 Nm (43 ft. lbs.). Replace the crankshaft damper, A/C compressor, generator and accessory drive belt tensioner. Link the radiator hoses at the top and bottom, the two heater hoses and the radiator fan. Fill the cooling system after that and reconnect the battery's negative cable.
