2006 Dodge Dakota Timing Cover Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service the Timing Cover and Chain on 2006 Dodge Dakota?
A: Before tackling the timing chain, take away the negative battery terminal and release the coolant. Lift off the entire electric cooling fan and fan shroud assembly and then the radiator fan. Remove both the hoses from the timing cover and the lower radiator hose at the engine. After that, take out the accessory drive belt tensioner assembly (1), crankshaft damper, generator and A/C compressor. This engine has an anaerobic sealant which means Mopar Grey Engine RTV sealant should be applied to the front cover during service. You don't have to remove the water pump before you remove the timing cover. Follow by removing the bolts holding the timing cover to the engine block and then remove the timing cover. While installing, rub the timing chain cover and block with rubbing alcohol only and never use oil or abrasive tools that could harm the surface. Look at the o-rings in the water passage (2) and change them if they are damaged. Put a 3 to 4 mm thick line of Mopar Engine RTV sealer on the front cover, then fix the cover in place and tighten each fastener to 58 Nm (43 ft. lbs.). Install a new crankshaft damper, A/C compressor, generator and tensioner onto the accessory drive belt. Connect the upper and lower hoses at the radiator, both heater hoses and the radiator fan. After that, fill up the coolant and hook the negative battery cable back into its connection.
