2005 Dodge Neon Brake Drum Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How Can a Deeply Scored or Warped Brake Drum Be Machined and Installed on 2005 Dodge Neon?
A: If a brake drum has major signs of damage, place it on a suitable brake lathe and machine it according to the instructions given by the car maker. Check the drum diameter before machining; if machining might cause the drum to get too large and no longer fit within allowed specifications, it has to be replaced. A maximum allowable diameter is marked on every brake drum. In machining, ensure the fine finish feed cut is used so that there is no screw effect on the brake shoes when braking, since this requirement differs between lathe manufacturers. Make sure your vehicle is lifted up high and the wheel and tire are removed from the back, then if you have clips hold the drum in place which should be removed last. If the drum does not come loose, back off the brake automatic adjuster screw by pushing the rubber plug up from the top of the brake support plate and turning the screw upward with a screwdriver. Before placing the drum onto the rotor, be sure to examine the brake shoe linings, how straight the shoes are and if there is any dirt. Fit the rear brake drum onto the hub and bearing, followed by setting up the tire and wheel, tightening the mounting nuts to a torque of 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Adjust the rear brake shoes when needed and bring the vehicle down to the ground.
